Overland Park, KS- This morning, the three county sheriffs with jurisdiction in Kansas' Third Congressional District announced their endorsement of Kevin Yoder for re-election. Collectively, they have served our communities for more than 113 years in local law enforcement.
Wyandotte County Sheriff Don Ash, Johnson County Sheriff Calvin Hayden, and Miami County Frank Kelly issued a joint statement with the announcement:
"The men and women across America and here in Kansas who put on the badge every day to protect and serve do it with honor and integrity, putting their lives on the line to keep our communities safe. They need a United States Congressman who has their back. We have each known Kevin for years, and we know he has a deep respect for law enforcement and we appreciate his leadership and representation in Congress.
"We know that Kevin is the right person for this job, regardless of his political opponent. But we felt it was particularly important to announce our support today in light of the disturbing revelations last week about his opponent's sentiments towards federal immigration law enforcement officers.
"We not only endorse Congressman Yoder, we join him in calling on Ms. Davids to disavow these comments."
On Thursday, the Kansas City Star revealed that Sharice Davids participated in a podcast interview in July in which she stated support for abolishing ICE and agreed with the notion that the agency existed for the sole purpose of "arresting, detaining, and deporting people based on their race" and that the United States has a "white supremacist immigration system."
On Friday, Yoder called for Davids to disavow these sentiments and explain to the voters why she would agree with them in the first place.
Four days later, Davids has yet to respond.
